Barry Gone Home

The following photographs are taken from the exhibition Barry Gone Home. They were first shown at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Malta before travelling to the UK, where they were exhibited at the Design Exchange in Bradford. The work traces the final journey of Barry Nelson, who had been diagnosed as terminally ill with cancer. In the months that followed his diagnosis, Barry chose to revisit the people and places that had shaped him throughout his adult life, the landscapes he loved, the friendships he forged, and the island that had become a second home.

For more than twenty years, Barry had travelled to Malta, forming bonds that went far beyond those of a casual visitor. His connection to the island was deep and genuine, reflected most clearly in his role as Life President of the M’Sida Red Stars football team. His warmth, humour, and generosity earned him a place in the hearts of many, and his popularity was such that, upon his death, a Mass was held in his honour at the M’Sida Cathedral. The church was so full that people stood outside in the street to pay their last respects.

This exhibition is not simply a record of Barry’s final months; it is a tribute to a life lived with sincerity and affection. Each image captures a fragment of the world he cherished, the familiar faces, the quiet corners, the sun‑worn streets, and the island that welcomed him as one of its own. Barry Gone Home stands as a testament to the enduring impact one person can have on a community, and to the way a place can become part of who we are.
